Wireless communication using Arduino and Zigbee

Today we discussed an exciting new project that we want to try out.

We’ve been wanting to try out an Arduino for a while now. As well as wireless communication using the zigbee protocol. There was a lot of brainstorming, while everyone came up with their ideas. Some quite zacky.
Anyway, this is what we came up with finally:

  • Arduino with sensors is the most basic combination. We will connect our Arduino (maybe an Arduino Uno) to a light/luminosity sensor.
  • When the light/brightness level falls below a certain level, the Arduino will send an instruction to a connected XBee (Zigbee protocol) module.
  • This Zigbee module will communicate with its pair (maybe across the room).
  • This other Zigbee module will receive the message and fire on a (circuit) switch to turn on a light (either directly if possible, or through Arduino ?).
  • We dont want to wait for it to get dark naturally, so we will pull the curtains to make it dark and see the light come on.
  • When we let the natural day-light back in our sensor-arduino-zigbee configuration should turn off the light.
  • But there’s so much that can be done with Arduino shields to enable different functions. Also havinig some direct control, right in our hands seemed like great fun. Ideas that came in in the brainstorming ranged from making a remote control (perhaps bluetooth) to arduino (with relevant shield) – zigbee – zigbee – light. Or that we give Arduino a Wi-Fi shield and control it over the internet.
  • Finally we decided on WiFi-enabled the Arduino, and cntrolling it from a basic app on an internet enabled smartphone.
  • This configuration sounded like a lot of fun to everybody, and was unanimously frozen on.
  • Its also quite extensible. In the sense that instead of one light, it could be an array of lights, each of which can be turned on or off separately. Also the Arduino will be exposed to the internet, which opens up a host of possibilites.

GMRT Visit

The trip

We had a nice trip to Narayangaon, in Junnar, about 85 kms north of Pune city. The change in scenery was beautiful and refreshing. Two of the Ashtavinayaks are also in this area – Lenyadri and Oza. Also the Shivneri fort. But we were on a different quest, a scientific one. We had come to visit the GMRT facility run by the NCRA department of TIFR, Mumbai. 🙂 That is, the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope facility run by the National Centre of Radio Astrophysics department of the Tata Institue of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. GSAT-16 and INSAT

We’ve had a good time discussing satellites on and off for a while now. India’s satellite program in general. And GSAT 16 in particular. This was prompted by the recent news that the 2nd raising manoeuvre of GSAT 16 took place on Dec-9.Here are some notes.

GSAT-16 was launched as part of the INSAT program. INSAT stands for Indian National Satellite System.
